Robots are transforming public safety by tackling high-risk tasks that once put human lives in jeopardy. From investigating suspicious packages to navigating unstable structures, robots allow first responders to assess dangerous situations from a safe distance.
Quadruped robots, a recent advancement in robotics, bring a new level of agility and capability to emergency responses. Unlike earlier models limited by wheels or tracks, these four-legged machines can navigate stairs, rugged terrain, tight spaces, and even slippery surfaces. Equipped with cameras and sensors, they give responders critical “eyes on the ground” in potentially hazardous environments. For example, in April 2023, the New York City Fire Department deployed a quadruped robot to assess a collapsed parking garage. The robot used visual and thermal cameras to locate a victim and provide structural data, helping responders make safer, more informed decisions.
