Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) is revolutionizing rehabilitation for intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators in prison. By allowing offenders to embody the victim’s perspective, VR fosters empathy, reduces violent tendencies, and encourages behavior change. In Catalonia, innovative VR programs have shown significant improvements in offenders’ emotional recognition skills—an essential step toward understanding the impact of their actions.
VR’s ability to simulate controlled, lifelike scenarios offers offenders a chance to learn and reflect in ways traditional methods cannot. Beyond empathy-building, it provides tools for behavioral assessment, helps develop healthier social norms, and increases motivation for rehabilitation. These programs complement established methods like group therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques, offering a cutting-edge approach to reduce recidivism.
Though VR is not a standalone solution, its integration into rehabilitation programs marks a promising step in addressing gender-based violence. As research evolves, VR’s potential for reshaping attitudes and facilitating reintegration into society continues to grow.
