The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has upgraded its body-worn camera systems with cutting-edge AI technology from Axon, aiming to enhance officer efficiency and reduce response times. This $2.5β$2.6 million annual investment, funded by grants and city revenue, features AI-powered auto-transcription to cut report writing time by 50β75%. Officers still review and verify reports to ensure accuracy, but the faster process allows them to address calls more promptly.
Since the system’s implementation, pending calls have dropped significantly, with only about a dozen calls in the queue at a time compared to over 100 just six months ago. The cameras also feature livestreaming, enabling real-time monitoring and communication during critical incidents like active shooter situations. CSPD leaders emphasize the system’s ability to improve officer safety and streamline decision-making during emergencies.
